It introduced a new mechanics to the series, what we now call “metroidvania”. There are still several classic style Castlevania’s like ReBirth and Dracula X Chronicles.

At least it was turned into a good thing (in my opinion). Resident Evil got turned into a bad thing, with the action-packed style.
