can all original ps3 consoles play ps2 games?

Just wondering if all original ps3 consoles play ps2 games before i buy one myself

The guy above me is wrong, only model that has any backwards compatibility is the original 60 gig. If you don’t like only 60 gigs of storage you can upgrade the hard drive easily.

What are the differences between the PS3 game consoles?

Free Playstation 3. Click Here Now!

Beyond being able to play PS2 games, what are the primary differences between the different ps3 consoles (40G, 60G, 80G)? What does the extra memory provide — more game profile storage capacity?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3#Retail_configurations

That table shows the differences between the consoles. NTSC are the Japan/North American consoles, PAL are Europe and Australia.

It’s worth noting that the 80GB NTSC model with backward compatibility, 4 USB ports, and all that is actually discontinued in North America, contrary to what that table says (It might still be available in Japan).

Can Play Station 2 games be played on Play Station 3 consoles? Can PS2 games be saved on PS3 consoles?

It depends on which ps3 you own. Older PS3 are backwards compatible ( Meaning you can play PS2 games on the PS3) however the newer PS3 are not. I believe your able to play downloaded PS2 games from the PSN Store and play them on any PS3. You can however save PS2 and PS1 games on a PS3 buy creating a memory card file on your PS3 harddrive.

What PS3 consoles can play PS2 games?

Free Playstation 3. Click Here Now!

I would like to know which ps3 consoles (versions) can run/play PS2 games. Where can I get one?

    http://answers.yahoo.com/search/search_advance;_ylt=At0kKnJvnbMHvtfGO2tWUfDsy6IX;_ylv=3?p=
search is your friend. learn to use it! seriously! this is the MOST asked question on Answers!!!

backward compatibility for the PS3 with PS2 games is as follows on NTSC systems:

20GB (4 USB slots, no longer in production) – yes
60GB (4 USB slots, no longer in production) – yes
80GB with 4 USB slots (no longer in production, bundled with MGS4 or Motor Storm) – yes
40GB (2 USB slots, no longer in production) – NO
    80GB with 2 USB slots – NO
    160GB (2 USB slots) – NO
    120GB/slim (2 USB slots) – NO
any other up coming ps3’s – NO

PAL systems only have one backwards compatible system, and that’s the 60GB.

in short: if it has 4 USB slots, yes. if it has 2 USB slots, no.

    all PS3s play PS1 games.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3#Model_comparison

the download that others are referring to are for the PS3s that already are backwards compatible. downloading it to a non-backwards compatible PS3 will do NOTHING but take up space on your hard drive! it will NOT make your PS3 play PS2 games!!!

"If a PLAYSTATION 3 is not backward compatible, you will not be able to add this function through any hardware (i.e., changing the hard disk drive) or software (i.e., updates, homebrew) upgrades or modifications. "
that came DIRECTLY from Sony’s own website: http://playstation.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/playstation.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=232&p_sid=1P9bCDwj

and no, not all PS2 games or PS1 games will work. the 20GB and 60GB come the closest to being fully backwards compatible with PS2 games, but they still do not play 100% of those games or PS1 games. if you buy a backwards compatible PS3 and want to know which of your PS2 games work, check this link: http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus

Tell me, is there a difference between Ps3 Consoles?

Free Playstation 3. Click Here Now!

Is there a difference between the Ps3 with 20Gb 40Gb 80Gb 120Gb consoles please shed some light on the subject

20GB, No WiFi, hard drive too small, does play PS2 games, (all other PS3’s do have WiFi)

60GB, Has WiFi can be a bit noisy, but my one has been very reliable, does play PS2 games, has memory card reader.

40GB, hard drive too small. Cannot play PS2 games

80GB, , older one with 4 usb ports, came in bundle with MGS4 or Motorstorm, less noisy, Can play 80% of PS2 games, reliable.

80GB, newer one, with 2 usb ports, Cannot play PS2 games, less noisy, reliable.

    160GB,WiFi, cannot play PS2 games.

All of the above ps3’s are no longer in production. You can still get the newer 2 usb port 80GB, new in some shops, and you might still be able to find a new 160GB, but the rest have to be bought second hand or refurbished.

    New PS3’s

120GB Slim. WiFi, Smaller size, runs more quietly and uses less energy, seems to be as reliable as the others, cannot play PS2 games.

250GB Slim, same as the 120GB but with a bigger hard drive:)

    Sony PlayStation 3 20GB Console

Free Playstation 3. Click Here Now!

    Sony PlayStation 3 20GB Console
The PlayStation 3 was first officially announced May 16, 2005, at a press conference prior to the 11th annual Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles. The design of the machine incorporates many successful standards established by the original PlayStation and the PlayStation 2 both of which led the console markets throughout their respective generations but it also offers some new features that distinguish it from its predecessors as well as its competition.

Fittingly, the central feature of the PS3 is its CPU, the Cell processor, which was codeveloped by IBM, Toshiba, and Sony. The ps3’s Cell processor uses seven “Synergistic Processing Elements” (SPEs) plus an eighth for “redundancy,” and is designed to dynamically handle multiple operations. Graphics are produced through the RSX GPU, which was codeveloped with Nvidia. The console has 256MB of XDR RAM for use by the CPU, and another 256MB of GDDR3 VRAM for use by the graphics chip.

PlayStation 3 games can be written to DVD or Bluray discs (BDs), the higher density format codeveloped by Sony and Toshiba. Like the PS2, the PS3 is backwardscompatible, and can play both original PlayStation and PS2 games, as well as ps3 games. It can also read and play audio, video, and other files from a variety of contemporary media formats, including CDs, DVDs, and BDs.

The form of the PlayStation 3 console is similar in size but somewhat squatter than that of the PS2. It can be operated in either a horizontal or vertical position. When laid flat, the PS3 console case has a squareish footprint, and its top bows upwards, with a fronttoback arch. This case is a silvery gray plastic, and it has a sleek, Spartan aesthetic, with a only the disc drawer plainly visible along its front. Four USB ports are hidden behind a front panel.

More so than its predecessors, the PlayStation 3 was designed for communication and compatibility with other electronic devices. In addition to its Bluetooth functionalities, the console has Ethernet ports and capacity for a IEEE 802.11 b/g “WiFi” connection. Internetconnected gamers can access the web, chat with online friends, and even download content, even while playing a game. The console also reads Memory Stick, SD, and Compact Flash memory, creating opportunities for crossplatform file sharing and other communications between the PS3 and the PlayStation Portable. ~ T.J. What’s the difference between the Bulky PS3 and the Slim PS3 except for size and weight?

Free Playstation 3. Click Here Now!

I’d like to buy my husband a PS3 for Christmas but my friend says the new Slim PS3 is not as good as the Old one with regards to the games that can be played. Is it true that the Slim PS3 cannot play the PS2 games like the old one can?

The Slim PS3 can’t play PS2 games like some of the previous models. Also, the Hard Drive is 120GB, which is bigger than most of the other models. The Linux OS can’t be installed on the Slim either. The PS3 is a great system, and I highly suggest you get one. If you are going for PS2 support, you should get the older model, but make sure that it supports backward compatability. If you want the extra storage, get the Slim ps3.

How is the PS3 slimline better than the normal PS3?

Free Playstation 3. Click Here Now!

I have the ps3 80 gb version and have been reading up on the specs on the new ps3 slimline. All i notice thats different is it’s smaller, obviously, and has a larger hardrive and is apparently slightly cheaper to run. Is there anything else? If not then sony is milking it and trying to extend the product life cycle.

Well, no major difference between the slim and the normal versions besides what you said, but the PS3 slim won’t be able to run PS2 games, like the normal version can and it has 2 USB slots instead of 4.

I prefer the normal version cause it looks nicer(except for the fingerprints), but the slim will surely be a hit.

    Hope it helps!
